SIX NATIONS – It’s official, Six Nations Rebels are the 1st franchise in Canada to win the Founders Cup title 5-times (1997, 2007, 2008, 2011 and 2012) following a thrilling 8-7 win over Akwesasne Indians in the Founders Cup tournament final Sunday evening at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena before 2,700 plus lacrosse fans.
The Akwesasne started Jake Lazore in goal while the Rebels started, Chase Martin.
The Rebels would never trail in this contest Dallas John (2:23), Jacob Bomberry (5:24) and Dallas John (2nd of the game @ 10:24) would make it 3-0 early. Indians Hank Delisle (13:19 & 13:42) narrowed the gap with a pair of markers 23 seconds later. Wayne Hill (18:09) would add to the score before the 2nd of the first 20 minutes of action. Rebels outshot Indians 17-12 in the first period.
The 2nd period was dominated by the Rebels scored the only two goals with Dallas John (hat-trick & power play goal @ 13:59) and Jacob Crans (17:45) made it 6-2 after 40 minutes of play. Rebels were outshot by the Indians 19-15 in the second 20-minute session.
Rebels Brine Rice (5:01) made it 7-2 early in the 3rd period. Akwesasne captain Chad Thompson (5:25) ended Martin’s shutout streak at 31:43 with a goal just 24 seconds later. Kyle Lewis (8:39), Derek Hopps (9:45) and Adam Bomberry (13:07) scored to make it a 1-goal game at 7-6 for Rebels. Ian Martin (13:43) would score the eventual Founders Cup Game-Winning-Goal with 6:17 remaining. Indians Kyle Lewis (16:41) scored to cut the lead to 8-7 as that would be as close as Akwesasne would get in the final frenzied minute of play. Both teams had 17 shots each in the third period to give the Rebels a shooting edge of 49-48 edge in shots for the entire contest.
The Rebels were led by Zed Williams (5A) with a five-point performance. Dallas John (3G) and Ian Martin (1G, 2A) contributed a three-point night. Tugo Goodleaf (2A) had a pair of helpers. Jacob Bomberry (1G, 1A), Brine Rice (1G, 1A), Jacob Crans (1G, 1A), Wayne Hill (1G, 1A) and Joe Haodais Maracle (2A) had two-point evenings. Single Rebels points were by Kevin Davey (1A).

Rebels to face Akwesasne for Founders Cup title Sunday

SIX NATIONS - The 4-time Founders Cup champions, 2012 J. A. MacDonald Trophy winners as Ontario Jr B Champions, Six Nations Rebels will have a rematch of the Ontario final Sunday afternoon for the 2012 Founders Cup Championship. The Rebels (4-1-1) earned their ticket to finals with a 19-8 win over Onondaga Redhawks Saturday night at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena before 1,400 plus lacrosse fans. While Akwesasne Indians (5-0-0) defeated Calgary Mountaineers (3-1-1) 11-8 the previous game to renew the battle of the two First Nations Jr B teams. The Rebels defeated Akwesasne 3-0 in the Best-of-Five Ontario Jr B finals earlier in the month of August.
The Onondaga started Tyler Niemczak in goal while the Rebels started, Donovan Fleischer. The Rebels would never trail in this contest Wayne Hill (0:57) and Brine Rice (2:50) would make 2-0 early. Redhawks Aennadie McComber (3:04) narrowed the gap 14 seconds later. Jacob Bomberry would score the next three Rebels goals (8:20; 9:16 and 16:46 on the power play) however, Redhawks Orris Edwards (9:00), Nick Angus (Power play goal @13:36) and Lyle Thompson (14:10) exchange goals during Jacobs hat-trick for 5-4 Rebels lead. Rebels Ian Martin (18:33) converted an intercept a pass deep in Redhawks end into a 6-4 Rebels after 20 minutes of action. Rebels outshot Redhawks 25-18 in the first period. |
The 2nd period was dominated by the Rebels as Zed Williams (power play goal @ 3:03 and 9:25) made it 8-4 before Onondaga Lyle Thompson (2nd of the game @ 13:54) scored a shorthanded goal. Jacob Bomberry (4th of the game @ 14:50) and Kevin Davey (18:14) gave Rebels a 10-5 lead after 40 minutes of play. Rebels outshot Redhawks 24-15 in the second 20-minute session.
Rebels continued to dominate the contest as Dallas John (power play goal @ 16:16), Joe Haodais Maracle (1:35), Dallas John (2nd of the game - 2:57), Ian Martin (2nd of the game @ 7:41), Zed Williams (hat-trick @ 8:31) and Brier Jonathan (10:05) all scored to give Six Nations a 16-5 lead. Troy Benedict (11:18) and Orris Edwards (power play goal @ 14:45) scored Redhawks 6th & 7th goals of the game.
