Six Nations Rebels Claim 4 of 7 League Awards
ELORA – The 3-time Founders Cup champions, Six Nations Rebels 2010 lacrosse season may have came to an end at the hands of the Elora Mohawks one week ago, however that did not stop the Rebels players from laying claim to 4 of the 7 OLA Jr B Western Conference League Awards Sunday night prior to Game 2 of the OLA Jr B league finals at the Elora Community Centre as voted on by the 27 OLA Jr B teams General Managers and Coaching Staff’s.
The Rebels Wayne VanEvery took home the OLA Jr B Western Conference High Scorers Award for his 100 (52G, 48A) points for the 2010 regular season in which the Rebels were a perfect 20-and-0 record. VanEvery did win the Fan Choice as MVP as well as set a Rebels Franchise record of Most Combined goals with 176 during his 5-year career with the Rebels.
The goaltending trio of Don Alton, H. Warren Hill and Klayton Maracle were the winners of the OLA Jr B Western Conference Goaltending Awards as they allowed the Conference low of 108 goals in 20 regular season contests. This is the 3rd consecutive year for the Rebels goalies to win the OLA Jr B Western Conference Goaltending Awards as C. Randy Johnson, Klayton Maracle and Cody VanEvery won in 2008 while Don Alton, H. Warren Hill and Cody VanEvery won the award in 2009.
Rebels captain, Jason Johns was named the OLA Jr B Western Conference Top Defensive Player of the Year for the 2nd consecutive season. Johns also set a Rebels Franchise mark by playing in 64 post-season contests in his Jr B career which began in 2005. Hawenaedas Thomas was the 2008 and 2007 award winner to make this the 4th consecutive year a Rebels defender taking home this hardware.
Rebels sensational rookie, Jacob “Jake” Bomberry was named the OLA Jr B Western Conference Rookie-of-the-Year for 2010 to become the 1st Rebels player to win the 1st Year player honours. Bomberry finished with 83 (32G, 51A) points in 20 games while having only 8 minutes in penalties. Of the 32 goals, Jake scored 13 power play goals, 1 shorthanded and 4 game-winning-goal’s over the course of the regular season.
